Dr. Rajmal D. Jain is an internationally acclaimed astrophysicist who has made fundamental contribution to the development of Solar and Planetary Physics and related instrumentation in India. Dr. Jain is one of the founders of the Udaipur Solar Observatory (USO) and has been a key contributor to its growth. Recently on 10 January 2014, Prof. Rajmal Jain, Hon. Scientist at Physical Research Laboratory, Dept. of Space, Govt. of India, received highly prestigious and top international award as Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society, UK. This designation honors foreign nationals based overseas, typically in recognition of their services to astronomical and geophysical sciences such as through distinguished leadership of observatory/ laboratory, outstanding services to national or international organizations, exceptionally important discoveries, influential work in education and outreach in these sciences; or especially outstanding work in the history of these sciences. This award came to him as a result of being Principal Investigator of “Solar X-ray Spectrometer (SOXS)” mission launched aboard GSAT-2 spacecraft of India in 2003, and he discovered iron and nickel line features in the outer atmosphere of the Sun known as corona. The SOXS mission was the first solar astronomy space borne experiment of India. The mission worked with a great success for 8 years, a history in ISRO. Through his outstanding research Dr. Jain demonstrated that solar radiation influences the earth’s climate as well as the atmosphere of the other planets. Dr. Rajmal Jain is only Asian to receive this award in the year of 2014. Prof. Rajmal Jain is currently Outstanding Professor and Dean, Research Cell at Kadi Sarva Vishwavidyalaya, Gandhinagar. Earlier he was senior scientist in Physical Research Laboratory, Dept. of Space, Govt. of India where he worked for the SOXS mission and other payloads for future space missions. Prof. Rajmal Jain is the First Asian to receive International Young Astronomer Award from NOAO/USA. He has been honored by Vigyan Purskar, Govt. of Rajasthan and SAARC Countries Resource Person Award, Ministry of HRD, Govt. of India. His first foreign visit was to erstwhile USSR as a Prime Minister Fellow to attend International Conference in 1981, sponsored by the then Prime Minister of India Late Mrs. Indira Gandhi. Prof. Jain has visited by and large many countries of the world and represented India at various platforms.
