Challenges of Plant and Equipment Procurement in Nigeria Construction Industries

Abstract


The study examined challenges of plant and equipment procurement methods in construction industry in Nigeria with a view to identify various methods of procuring construction plants and equipments and also to investigate the challenges facing the procurement of plants and equipments and factors that influence the optimum use of the machine. Interview and structure questionnaires were used to collect data from professionals that specialize in both building and civil engineering works. Data collected were analyzed using descriptive method. The results showed that hiring was the best method of plants and equipments procurement adopted by contractors while limited availability of funds at the disposal of contractor was seen as the major challenge faced by most contractors during procurement of plants and equipments. Technical knowhow was ranked 1st as factor that influence the optimum use of plants and equipments. The paper recommended that government should subsidise the cost of equipment in order to make it affordable to contractors. It also advised that local assembly factory for construction plants and equipments be established in the country.
