Design of Model-based Controllers for a CSTR Process

S. Nagammai, K. Dhanalakshmi, S. Latha

Abstract

The objective of this paper is to propose suitable control strategies for controlling highly nonlinear system represented by the mathematical model of the jacketed continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR) with so called Van de Vusse reaction. The operating point of the reactor is chosen so as to give maximum yield of the desired product. The mathematical model of reactor is obtained by considering the feed flow rate (Fr) as the manipulated variable and the reactor product B concentration (CB) as the controlled variable. In this proposed work design of various controllers such as conventional PID, internal model control (IMC) and Model predictive controller (MPC) is made. The time domain performance specifications are compared. The simulation is provided to substantiate the superior performance of MPC over PID and IMC. The performances of the designed controllers are tested for both servo and regulatory operation. The simulation is carried out using MATLAB to control the modeled process.
