A Review on Cascade Tripping and Islanding Scheme

Supriya Rakshit, Mitali Pathak

Abstract

Large black outs typically involve sophisticated and cascading chains of events. Giant blackout though sporadic, is expensive to society with estimates of direct prices up to billions of bucks. There also are indirect prices like attainable social disruptions and also the propagation of failures into different infrastructures like communications, water system, fossil fuel and transportation. The very important importance of electrical power to our society motivates continuing attention to maintaining installation stability and developing new strategies to manage the chance of cascading blackouts. If the system is operated securely, such events do not lead to loss of load or instability. Islanding scheme is used as prevention against such large cascading failures.
