Biotherapeutic Antibacterial Activity of Some Medicinal Plants Against Predominant Bacteria Causing Dental Caries

Abstract


 

Dental caries is a microbial disease of the calcified tissues of the teeth, characterized by demineralization of inorganic portion and destruction of the organic substance of the tooth. It is most prevalent chronic disease affecting the human race. The in vitro antibacterial activity of some medicinal plants was studied against pathogenic bacteria causing dental caries. Leaves were extracted using petroleum ether, chloroform, acetone, methanol and distilled water. Among the five solvents used, leaves extracted in methanol were found to be more effective against pathogenic bacteria. These plant extracts should be further studied to determine the bioactive compounds as well as to understand the possible mechanisms of action and evaluate their toxicity looking towards a pharmaceutical employment.
