An Evaluation of Effects of Type-II Diabetes Mellitus on Salivary Flow Rate and Some Salivary Parameters (Total Protein, Glucose, and Amylase) in a Tertiary Care Hospital in Uttar Pradesh, India

Abstract


Objective of this study is to evaluate the constituents of salivary total protein, glucose and amylase about their alterations in diabetics as compared to healthy subjects. Salivary flow rate, salivary total protein, glucose, and amylase were measured in 225 subjects, 75 in each uncontrolled diabetes, controlled diabetes and healthy non-diabetics. A lower level of salivary glucose was observed among healthy subjects compared with uncontrolled and controlled diabetes subjects and the difference was statistically significant between uncontrolled and healthy (p = 0.0001), controlled and healthy (p = 0.0001) and uncontrolled and controlled (p = 0.003) subjects. However, salivary amylase was significantly higher among healthy subjects than uncontrolled (p = 0.0001) and controlled (p = 0.0001) diabetes subjects. The total salivary protein was significantly different among all the groups. The USR and SFR were significantly higher among healthy subjects compared with uncontrolled and controlled diabetes subjects. The poor correlation was observed among the salivary parameters and duration in both uncontrolled and controlled diabetes groups. A significant difference in the salivary parameters was found between uncontrolled and controlled diabetics and healthy subjects. Further research on larger sample size and longitudinal study is required to get more conclusive results.
