A Survey of Awareness and Willingness of Contraception in Married Males

Abstract


This study was carried out for assessing the choice of contraceptive methods and awareness among married males. Through Knowledge Index (KI), knowledge, attitude and practices were ascertained. The objectives of the study were to determine the choice of contraceptive methods and to know and to create awareness and willingness for different contraceptive methods among married males attending NIUM Hospital, Bangalore. This was a cross-sectional study and 1000 married males were included in it. A pre-tested and semi-structured questionnaire was used to collect the information about socio-demographic profile, knowledge index, attitude, current contraceptive practices, willingness of contraceptive status and future intentions for contraceptive practices. Study population had been counselled and motivated to make them sensitize to contraception. Out of a total of 1000 married males, 68.1% were current users and 31.9% were non-users of any contraceptive methods. Among all volunteers 30.2% had used female sterilization as permanent method and 38% had used temporary methods Most common contraceptive in volunteers of the age group 21–35 years were condom (35.37%) and Cu-T (9.9%), in age group 36–50 years most preferred was female sterilization (46.74%), in age group 51–65 years female sterilization (46.49%). The present study reveals a strong association between temporary and permanent choices of contraceptive methods according to age, religion, habitat, SES, family status and KI, first choice was of female sterilization and second choice was of condom.
