Mathematical Modeling of the Flexural Strength, Impact Energy and Water Absorption of a Pineapple Fibre-HDPE Composite using RSM Technique

B. Dan Asabe, A. A. Galadi

Abstract

Apineapple fibre reinforced HDPE composite was developed. Response surface methodology (RSM) experimental design was employed using the latest Design Expert 10.0 software and the sample composites were produced by compounding using two-roll mill and subsequent thermoformimg in a hot pressing machine. Mathematical models of the flexural strength, impact energy and water absorption were developed and statistically validated. The model for the flexural strength fitted best with quadratic model while the impact energy and water absorption fitted best respectively with the linear model. Comparison of the models with experimental results graphically showed high degree of agreement. Thus the mathematical models can be used to navigate and predict the flexural strength, impact energy and water absorption.
