Study of Microstructural and Mechanical Properties of YSZ and YSZ/Al2O3 Nanopowders Synthesized by Solution Combustion Method

Abstract

In the present work different compositions of nanocrystalline tetragonal zirconia stabilized with yttrium oxide (YSZ) have been produced by solution combustion route. Same compositions of YSZ with alumina doping have also been prepared by similar method. The nanopowders obtained are characterized by various characterization techniques like XRD, FTIR, SEM and Wilson Hardness testing techniques. XRD and FTIR analysis confirmed the tetragonal phase of calcined YSZ sample. The particle sizes are found to be in nanometer range and it is clear from the SEM of these samples that grain growth is uniform in size and shape. Further it is found that the mechanical strength of these samples increases with increase in percentage of alumina doping.
