Carbon Nanotubes: A Potential Reinforcement Material for Composites

Abstract

Since their invention almost 10 years ago by Iijima, carbon nanotubes have been the concentration of significant research. Various researchers have since then have reported surprising physical and mechanical properties for this new type of carbon. Having exceptional mechanical properties including strength, modulus, stiffness which exceeds all current materials, carbon nanotubes offer tremendous opportunities for the development of fundamentally new nanotubes reinforced metal matrix or metal ceramics composite materials for applications in 21st century. This paper is an attempt to discuss the recent advances in carbon nanotubes and their composites with a focus on properties of the composites.
