Generating electrical energy through biomass has advantages besides achieving self-sustainability. Biomass is particularly useful for agriculture dependent economy nations like India. Energy conversion systems based on biomass are particularly interesting because biomass utilization effectively closes the carbon cycle. A comprehensive process model is developed for biomass gasification in an atmospheric fixed bed rector using the ASPEN PLUS simulator. An original equilibrium gasification model using ASPEN PLUS was first built and validate based on experimental data for three different types of feed stocks viz; babul wood, neem wood and mango wood, to arrive at satisfactory performance. Efficacy of a 35kVA rated down draught gasifier was studied in terms gasifier efficiency, tar content and total particulate matter. Electrical output readings were observed to be 23.4 kVA, 22.17 kVA and 20.4 kVA with babul wood, neem wood and mango wood respectively with satisfactory performance. With further increase in fuel input and resistive load, the frequency and voltage were reduced. Significant improvement was achieved with babul wood as fuel. Cooling and filtration systems were adopted to obtain better quality and dirt-free syn gas. It is observed that specific fuel consumption of wood be approximately thrice as high with liquid petroleum fuels for generating same amount of energy. ASPEN PLUS was shown to be well adapted to model the gasification process (equilibrium). The study also revealed that the developed gasifier is a user friendly and a boon to the areas which are not well connected to grid power and decentralized power generation.
