Energy is the basic driver of growth. Socio-economic growth is not possible unless energy security is ensured. The demand for energy in India is growing at a rapid rate. India is the world’s fifth largest energy consumer. This rapid growth in demand can be attributed to rise in population and increasing economic development. However, there is a great gap between demand and supply of energy in the country. India depends heavily on coal and oil for meeting its energy demand which contributes to smog, acid rain and greenhouse gases emission. Last 25 years has been a period of exuberant hunt of activities related to research, development, production and distribution of energy in India. Indian economy has been growing at a rapid and impressive pace, averaging over 8% during last few years. India’s need to increase energy provision for its population and a fast-growing economy poses a formidable challenge which is perceived as both a great opportunity as well as a necessity for the country to increase the share of renewables in the overall energy mix. India is making efforts to harness the potential of renewable energy resources such as biomass, solar, hydro, wind and geo-thermal energy. Renewable energy sources have emerged as a viable option to achieve the goal of social-economic development while ensuring environmental protection. The aim of this paper is to bring into focus the biomass energy that can be tapped to meet the country’s energy requirement. Keywords: Power, wind energy, voltage, energy conversion systemsDownloads
