Resumen

Antarcticite (CaCl2.6H2O) is one of the salt hydrate forms of Calcium chloride. It has a specific application in energy storage systems at ambient temperature, since its melting point is around 29ºC. During the conventional synthesis of Antarcticite, a risk of other hydrates crystallization is there. An experimental procedure is designed through binary melting phase diagram for selective crystallization of Antarcticite from aqueous CaCl2 solution. The melting and recrystallization behavior of Antarcticite under various heating and cooling rates tested at milligram scale and possibility of other hydrates crystallization is verified. During heat effect tests (heating and cooling cycles at various rates), change in melting point of CaCl2.6H2O and the loss in the melting enthalpy observed due to the formation of CaCl2.4H2O. The material after heat effect tests found to be useful as a phase change material in energy storage applications, where daily ambient is recorded at a minimum temperature ≤ 25°C and a maximum temperature ≥ 40°C.   Keywords: PCM, crystallization, phase diagram, hydrate synthesis, energy storage Cite this Article  Sistla VS, Sharma A.
