Resumo

The current work is primarily focused on synthesis of Aluminium 5083 – Silicon carbide – Fly ash composites enroute stir casting and its effective characterization for mechanical properties and microstructure. The aluminium 5083 alloy is an alloy that retains exceptional strength and has extreme corrosion resistant characteristics which makes it a potential material for its usage in ship building and aircraft industry. Silicon carbide is a ceramic which has very high hardness values, followed by corrosion resistance and better performance requirements unique to itself. Fly ash is a byproduct of burning pulverized coal in thermal power plants which predominantly contains aluminous and silicate materials forming a cementious in the presence of water, the use of fly ash in composites causes lubricity in between the silicon carbide and aluminium matrix apart from enhancing the strength characteristics and hardness while reducing the percentage elongation of the specimens. The results clearly give a foresight into the synthesis of aluminium silicon carbide fly ash hybrid metal matrix composites for better properties which can lead to its use in automobile, marine and aerospace components. Keywords: Aluminium, silicon carbide, fly ash, hybrid, metal, matrix, composites, synthesis, propertiesCite this ArticleN.
