Manmade vehicles have been one of the biggest hazards to environmental pollution. Vehicular practices play a significant role in its causation. Not much information is available regarding the perceptions and practices of people about vehicular pollution in Delhi. A cross sectional study conducted in New Delhi on a sample of 400 subjects from various sections of populations in Delhi. Pre-tested semi-structured questionnaire was used to get the information and analyzed with the help of Epi-Info 2004 software. Majority of the studied population was commuting between 20-40 kms per day and spending 1-3 hrs on the roads. The awareness regarding the existing rules and hazards of vehicular pollution was nearly 90% but very few were doing something to prevent it. Less than 60% would like to use the public transport and other would prefer private transport because it is below their standard (35%) or it is too messy and uncomfortable (60%). Only 40% knew the preventive measures during driving that includes- switching off engine on red light, overloading car, and avoid over speeding and quick acceleration. Pooling cars and use of bio-fuels were the most common measures that will be used by people if available. Majority of cars used for commuting were occupied singly (excluding driver) while used to go to place of work or study. The awareness regarding vehicular pollution is high but there are few who would do something to curb it. Mere awareness campaign is not going to change the risky driving behavior of people, which require intensive behavior change communication. Keywords: Environmental air pollution, vehicular pollution, health effects, driving behavior, control measuresPublikováno
