A Systematic Study on Carbon Footprinting Calculation of Forging Industry and Its Carbon Offsetting through Renewable Energy Source

Forging industry, carbon footprinting, offsetting, CO2 and non-CO2 emissionsResumé
Forging industries are considered to be the most polluting industries causing not only air but also noise pollution. These industrial units mostly contain different types of furnaces and power hammers. Furnace oil is the main fuel used because of the considerable consumption of furnace oil. In this study, forged auto components were identified and a carbon footprint assessment was scientifically grounded. An effort was made for identification and calculation of carbon footprint of such units to address the urgent need for the relevant measures for offsetting the carbon footprint. In our study, forging industry produces CO2 emissions equal to 4.83 Gg, non-CO2 emissions 0.141 Gg, indirect emissions (utilities sector) 1.31 Gg and other emissions 0.064 Gg. These emissions can be offset through wind energy which produces approximately 4.0 MW power. This can be further used in the same industry. In calculation of carbon footprint, credible scientific standards like Green House Gas Protocol and IPCC Guidelines 1996 are used.Downloads
