Resumé

Nanocrystalline TiO2 films, undoped and doped W6+ ions have been prepared on cleaned glass substrate by sol-gel route. Formation of anatase TiO2 phase has been confirmed by XRD analysis of the samples annealed at 550oC for 5 hours. Size of nanocrystals calculated by Debye-Scherrer’s formula and measured by TEM was found to decrease with increase in doping level. Average nanocrystal diameter in undoped sample is ~ 60 nm and 5 mole % W6+ ion doped sample is ~33 nm. SEM and AFM observation shows surface roughness of the order of the particles size in undoped as well as W6+ ion doped samples. Calculations have shown ~50% increase kinetic efficiency of the films doped with 5mole% W6+ ions. XPS analysis revealed more oxygen deficiency and enhanced surface carbon content of the doped film. The increase photocatalytic activity of the doped film has complex dependent on the film porosity, roughness, existence of oxygen vacancies and carbon content at the surface of the W+6 ion doped film. Keywords:  TiO2, hexavalent cation, photo catalytic activities, nanostructures
