Abstract

Nuclear radiation has been the subject of scientific investigation since radioactivity was discovered by Henry Becquerel. This quest has led to harnessing nuclear radiations for the benefit of mankind in the fields of medicine, agriculture, industry and for production of electricity necessary for development. Nuclear fuel complex (NFC), an industrial unit under the department of atomic energy (DAE) located at Hyderabad manufactures and supplies nuclear fuel and zirconium alloy structural components for all the 20 operating nuclear power plants of India. While handling radiation, it is necessary to protect personnel of nuclear industry from its ill effects. At NFC, radiation and industrial safety including occupational health have been given paramount importance from the inception. Statutory periodic medical examinations carried out for employees registered nearly 100% attendance during the last 10 years. This health screening has helped immensely in identifying malignancies and other radiation related ailments early, which in turn has led to providing best possible medical care. NFC conducted an epidemiological survey at NFC in 2013–14 with the help of department of Oncology, KIMS, Hyderabad. The study revealed cancer prevalence in radiation workers is not different from the prevalence in non-radiation workers. The prevalence of malignancy in NFC is only 0.3% which is very much less than the naturally occurring prevalence rates in India. Presented here are the results of the survey of health profile of employees of NFC and its comparison with other studies conducted in India.   Keywords: Epidemiological survey, malignancies, radiation, radiation worker, occupational health, statutory medical examination Cite this Article Vijay Rao J, Dilip Kumar MRK.
