Abstract

In India, the prevalence of mental retardation varies from 0.22 to 32.7 per thousand populations. The needs expressed by families of mentally challenged children are different from person to person and family to family. Basic needs are food, shelter and clothes. The most pertinent areas where parents need to have support and guidance are relieving them from a stressful situation, ensuring family stability, managing child’s maladaptive behaviour placement options and future planning for their mentally challenged child [1]. The present article throws light on the needs and problems faced by the family caregivers of mentally challenged children from the Indian perspective.  Keywords: Mental retardation, child, challenges, parents, family, prevalence Cite this Article Vijayarani M, Balamurgan G.
