An Evaluative Study of the Teaching Programme in Brushing Technique in Lower Primary School Children 3–6 years of Age at Katapadi: Udupi Karnataka, India

The Objectives of this study are to assess the dental status of the children, to assess the brushing technique of the children, to prepare and to validate a teaching programme on brushing technique., to find the effectiveness of the teaching programme in terms of skill and dental status of the children, to find the association between dental status and brushing technique, to find the association between pre test brushing skill score and selected demographic variables that include age, gender, type of family, education of the parents, income of the parents and previous exposure to the topic tooth brushing. The method used was one pre test, post test design( pre- experimental) (.n= 71)was conducted in SVS English school Katapadi, Udupi, Karnataka to primary school children 3–6 years. Dental status was recorded by using W. H. O oral health assessment tool. The brushing technique was observed by using observational checklist. The analysis included descriptive and inferential statistics. The calculation of analysis to find the association Mann Whitney U test and wilcoxon signed rank test. Result of the study shows that the dental caries of school children were 73.2% and median of pre test= 3.00 and post test skill score median = 23.00. There was statistical significance in dental status and brushing technique value were Z= -1.112 and there was statistical significance between skill score and demographic variables age U= 111.00, Z=-5.654, gender U=415.00, Z= -1.284, type of family U= 312.00, Z=-2.722, pervious exposure to the topic tooth brushing U=36.00, Z= -1.858.
