Rural Banking in India: Its Contribution and Significance

Abstract

Considering the role and importance of agriculture in Indian economy for employment generation to poverty alleviation, rural development taken as one of the most important path for nation’s growth. It is found that most of rural populations are poor and they depend upon agriculture. For a smooth implementation in credit delivery mechanism of rural poor, government of India promoted rural regional banks. Rural banking in India plays a vital role in development of rural economy. The commercial banks, Regional Rural Banks are found in rural pockets of our country to help the rural people for their all round development. Rural banking is rightly called as “an engine of rural growth”. Villages have roughly 15 crore family and 30 crore income earner the number of Rural bank account is about 8 crore only. So, there is need to develop a profitable model of rural banking.The present paper is a qualitative analysis and secondary data was collected from various sources including journals ,magzines, books and the internet.Keywords: Rural Banking, Sustainable Development, Economic Performance, Banking System
