Effect of Burnishing on the Surface Quality and Hardness of ABS Plastic Samples Fabricated with Fused Deposition Modeling

Quality of surface is one of the important factors to decide the performance of a manufactured product. Fused deposition modeling has been used to fabricate the stepped cylindrical samples for surface roughness evaluation. The axis of the stepped cylinder was oriented as horizontal to minimize the time of fabrication. Evidently the surface quality was not satisfactory due to the staircase effect. Using burnishing process, an attempt was made to improve the surface quality of the component at different speed and penetrations keeping the feed rate constant. The burnishing process causes increase in hardness on the outer layers of the cylinders. Hardness tests were conducted on the samples to study the effect of burnishing on hardness. ANOVA has been carried out to identify the influence of these parameters on the quality of surface and hardness. Maximum burnishing effect on surface roughness was reported at 720 rpm and on hardness at 480 rpm. It was found that the penetration has higher influence than the speed, on the burnishing process. Keywords: Rapid prototyping, fused deposition modeling, burnishing, ANOVA, surface quality, hardness Cite this Article Vinitha M, Kedar Mallik M.
