Abstract

Image segmentation is the initial operation in image processing and computer vision to extract a region of interest from a still image or a sequence of images (video). Segmentation is the key operation to perform a number of applications today. Different supervised and unsupervised evaluation methods have been used for segmentation for numerous applications, but still it is a challenging task to identify which method is more accurate. This paper presents a survey on the analysis and comparison of these evaluation methods for evaluating the effectiveness of segmentation methods. It seems that more new techniques have been obtained in these years that are useful for improving accuracy, but still, it is an area of on-going investigation. Keywords: edge detection, evaluation, segmentation, thresholding, histogram
