Screening of Secondary Metabolites for Estimating Antimicrobial and Antioxidant Potency of Clitoria ternatea (L.)

The present study was carried out for the screening of secondary metabolites for estimating the antimicrobial potency of Clitoria ternatea (L.). In this study antimicrobial activity of leaves of Clitoria ternatea were studied by analyzing in different concentrations ranging from 100–500 µg. We observed that at higher concentrations (>300 µg) ethanolic extract of Clitoria ternatea showed certain significant antimicrobial effect. Antimicrobial activities against Escherichia coli, Fusarium verticillioides, Klebsiella sp., Aspergillus flavus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Bacillus subtilis, Dreschlera turcica, and Staphylococcus aureus were tested by measuring the zone of inhibition (ZOI). The separation of the bioactive compounds from the plant extract was carried out using thin layer chromatography (TLC). The main aim of this study is to estimate the secondary metabolites present in the leaves such as Alkaloids, Flavonoids, Phenols, Tannins and Saponins in Clitoria ternatea Plant. The secondary metabolites extracted from both in vivo and in vitro propagated Clitoria ternatea were comparatively estimated as Alkaloids (32 g) Flavonoids (23 g) Phenols (8 g) Tannins (1.5 g) Saponins (12.5 g).Downloads
