Abstract

 Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are a group of multipotent cells of diverse character composing a small ratio of the bone marrow and existing in both adult and fetal tissues. MSCs have the capacity for self-renewal, differentiation into various tissues and have the immunomodulatory properties. These remarkable properties of MSCs make them an ideal tool for tissue repair and regeneration. We review here the biological characteristics, isolation and test for the identification of MSCs. We present an overview of the potential of MSCs as promising candidates in the treatment of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and liver diseases. Also, in this review we discuss the future directions for MSCs.
