Oral Eruption Associated With Cefuroxime Axetil: An Unusual Complication

Cefuroxime Axetil is an oral cephalosporin class of antibiotic having broader gram negative activity and used in infective conditions caused by facultative bacteria and anaerobes such as respiratory tract infection, intra-abdominal infection, pelvic inflammatory disease and diabetic foot infection etc. Severe oral eruption associated with swelling on lips and mucosal erythemas are not described previously as ADR due to Cefuroxime. Here, we report a case of severe oral eruption induced by Cefuroxime Axetil. An adult male of 27 y of age received Cefuroxime Axetil with Paracetamol tablet for upper respiratory tract infection. Three days after ingestion of the above drugs, the patient developed severe oral eruption associated with swelling on lips, mucosal erythema and multiple whitish spots on face. This case was managed by withdrawal of cefuroxime with symptomatic therapy. Thus, it is important to recognize such type of reaction and manage it to prevent fatality.
