Work Profile, Hazard Exposure and General Illnesses amongst Welder in East Delhi

Abstract

Welders are one of the most vulnerable occupational groups for the hazardous exposures and adverse ergonomic conditions. However, there is a paucity of data on their work profile and various hazards exposures and the prevalent medical illness. A cross-sectional study was conducted amongst 35 welders residing in East Delhi using a pre-tested questionnaire containing items to assess the socio-demographic profile, their medical history and individual hazard exposure.  The mean age of the participants was 30.4±12 years. Majority of the respondents were educated up to primary level (43%). The median per capita income of the study group was Rs. 2000. Out of the total 35 participants, 40% found their work to be physically hard while 42.9% felt it to be dangerous. Majority were involved in lifting weight (63%). The predominant nature of work for majority was manual. Nearly 89% of the respondents replied that they are maximally exposed to smoke followed by heat (31%). Assessment of medical history revealed that most of them were suffering from eye related symptoms followed by skin conditions. It is concluded that large percentage of welders had perceived that their work was dangerous and physically hard; being exposed to at least one hazardous substance; complained various symptoms. Thus there is a need to undertake further research for studying various job related factors affecting health of this cadre of workers.
