Synergistic Antimicrobial Efficacy of Tazma (Melipona Spp.) and Bee (Apis Mellifera) Honey with Garlic (Allium Sativum) Against Multidrug Resistant Pathogenic Clinical Bacteria

Investigation on the search of alternative medicine is crucial where there is development of resistance against commercial antibiotics. The main objective of this study was to investigate antimicrobial activity of tazma and bee honey in combination with garlic against multidrug resistant pathogenic bacteria. Antimicrobial activities of test samples against standard and multidrug resistant bacteria were evaluated. Vancomycin was used as positive control. Minimum inhibitory and bactericidal concentrations of samples were determined using standard protocol. Antimicrobial activity of mixture of tazma and garlic against multidrug resistant pathogenic bacteria was significantly (P ≤ 0.05) greater than the rest test samples. Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of mixture of tazma honey and garlic extract at 6.25% against standard and multidrug resistant pathogenic bacteria was 75%. On the other hand, minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) of mixture of garlic extract with tazma honey against all multidrug resistant pathogenic bacteria was 12.5%. There is synergetic antimicrobial effect of tazma with garlic against multidrug resistant pathogenic bacteria. Their combination has immense potential of antimicrobial activity for the treatment of pathogenic bacteria as compared to commonly prescribed commercial antibiotic substances.
