The addition of fluoride in dentifrices all over the world is done for the antibacterial and carries prevention. Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) has given a permissible limit for addition of fluoride in dentifrices 1000 ppm for adult and 500 ppm for children; as early as by G.O.I. Notification No. GSR 223(E) dated 19.4.1991. Besides, addition of the raw material also contain fluoride that leads further addition, which leads to abnormal concentration of fluoride in dentifrices. Excessive amount of  fluoride in dentifrices is dangerous for human being causing dental fluorosis and  acute and chronic intoxication .We just made an attempt whether the manufacturer complying the legislation or not .We have purchased possible brands of toothpastes available in Delhi and NCR market of the same batch’s three samples and they were calculated as 24 brands of toothpastes for reference were analyzed quantitavely by Trisodium 2-Parasulfophenylazo- 1,8-Dihydroxy –3,6-Napthalene Disulfonate or 4,5 –Dihydroxy-3- Paraphenylazo-2,7 –Naphthalene Disulfonic Acid Trisodium Salt (SPADNS) method with UV Spectrophotometer . Our results indicated that nine toothpastes  exceeding the permissible limit for children and five for adults. Our finding underscores the need for regulation by the regulatory authorities for controlling the excessive addition of fluoride in these dentifrices and makes up a proper labeling which indicates the amount of fluoride present in tooth preparation.   Keywords: Fluoride, Toothpaste, SPADNS, UV SpectroscopyCite this Article Ranjan Amitabh, Agrawal S.S.
