Abstract

Amidst water for sustenance, underground water quality becomes further deterministic. The stance of its continual contamination due to infiltration, uncontrolled industrialization, unplanned inhabitation, etc., is making “quantity” meaningless unless maintenance of quality is addressed. One of the potent measures to combat this infiltration is creation of a semi-impervious media below the subsoil, which may regulate the outcome judiciously, and in a proffered way. The logistics, however, do not allow planned arrangements to always progress. The problem is acutely critical where water tends to collect in basins and lower levels where concentration of contaminants is out of control. The media in such landfill sites dominate towards enhancement of this load conducted further onto ground water. The present study reports simulation results of design, development and implementation for handling and control of an impervious media, using a 1:1 mix of gravel and tire shreds. Their feasibility was thus successfully proven as this mix was seen to limit the contamination to a minimum. Additionally, it provided high hydraulic conductivity. Keywords: Tire shreds, MSW-municipal solid waste, LFG-landfill gases, leachate collection and removal System (LCRS), eco-culture
