CFD Analysis of 4-Stroke Engine: A Review

To analyze 4-stroke engines, the method of computational 3D and 1D simulation is efficient and reliable. However, there is big scope as far as complexity of 3D CFD analyses that will be replaced by easily adoptable 1D-analysis. The issue that needs to focus is the correlation between real time cylinder gas composition and the composition of the exhaust flow, which is to be used in 1D simulation. The same is difficult to calculate by experiment and the same is resolved as all the required information would be taken from 3D CFD solution. This factor restricts the modeling and meshing to be utter careful. At the time of performing experiment at steady flow bench, several approximations were taken, thus obvious the flow net i.e. flow behaviour is quite different from the actual one; because the real time flow is transient in nature that ultimately leads to give correct properties at port discharge. 3D-CFD solution is not enough to predict exact thermodynamic quantities based on only one cycle, as each cycle has left some charge in exhaust port, which is being default input for next cycle and affecting all processes running in upcoming cycles. Therefore, a multi-cycle run simulation required to do accurate and cost-effective analysis.
