This paper presents review on the resistance welding of Al to Al, Al to Mg, Al to Al with steel as an interlayer with focus of mechanical properties and microstructure. Major barrier for the aluminum welding is the surface oxide layer which induces higher resistance for the welding of resistance spot welding. It results in the immediate tip wear of electrode and also gives effect on the properties of weld material in the resistance spot welding. Studies show that the significant cleaning of oxide layer upto few microns can enhance the electrode force and also low current and high frequency can significantly reduce the contact resistance which finally increases the joint quality of the aluminum. Interlayer of stainless steel can also change the fusion properties of the aluminum. Other interlayers like Al-Mg, Al-Cu28 also increase the formation of intermetallic compounds and improve joint quality.Cite this Article Arick Lakhani, Darji PH.
