Abstract

Ti6Al4V alloys are extensively used as implant material for bio-medical applications due to their high specific strength. But, their poor wear resistance results in formation of wear debris in implants and causing soreness. In this work, Al2O3-TiO2 coatings were applied to improve the wear resistance and hardness. Al2O3-TiO2 coatings are deposited on the substrate with 100, 200, 300, 400 μm thickness using detonation spray (DS). Pin on disc wear tests have been carried out with ASTM G-99 standard test procedure. Wear of the coated specimens was studied using Taguchi method and optimum parameters for decreasing the wear were determined. The predicted values and experimental values were good in agreement, and confirmed by using validation experiment.
