Aerosol Loadings in Association with Vegetative Properties: A Case Study Over North Indian Region

Abstract


Aerosols play an important role in the atmospheric absorption and scattering of light, thereby leading to both warming and cooling of atmosphere. In the Indian subcontinent, the concentration of the aerosols is increasing due to anthropogenic activities which in turn could affect the vegetative properties in the region. The paper presents the study of aerosol optical depth (AOD) in association with vegetative properties using Level 3 data from Multi-angle Imaging Spectro Radiometer (MISR) sensor onboard Terra platform for a period of 10 years (2005 to 2014). This study is specifically carried over the North Indian region ranging from 37.6°N to 25°N and 68.7°E to 88°E. Annual and seasonal mean and percentage change in AOD variations are studied along with variation in Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI). The study reports association of changes in NDVI with those of aerosol loadings for the past decade.
