Abstract

In Ethiopia, around 1.5 million pregnant and lactating women (PLW) screened for acute malnutrition and those with moderate acute malnutrition (MAM) admitted to the targeted supplementary feeding program (TSFP). As the health system accepted, the TSFP is recognized as critical for the reduction of maternal morbidity and mortality in case of community emergency nutrition, but the recovery outcome was not measured yet. The study was undertaken to assess the nutritional recovery status and its determinants of the TSFP in MAM among PLW.A cross-sectional study design was used to collect data from 17 January to 17 March 2015. A total of 532 PLW were included using multistage sampling technique and data were collected using structured interview administered questionnaire. Data were coded and entered into Epi-info version 3.5.4 and analyzed using SPSS version 20 software. Descriptive, bivariate and multivariable logistic regression analyzes were performed. Analyzes were done at 95% confidence level and 5% level of significance. The mean age and S.D. of respondents was 28.4 and 1.6, respectively. The overall prevalence of nutritional recovery status was 450 (84.6%). On multivariate logistic analysis, using TSF entitled ration (AOR 0.023[95% CI= 0.002-0.242]), TSF preparation in the form of porridge (AOR 0.022 [95%CI=0.001-0.435]), TSF mixed with water and oil (AOR 0.008 [95% CI= 0.000-0.233]) and TSF food eaten by all members of the family (AOR 2.196 [95% CI=1.296-3.721]) were significantly associated with nutritional recovery status among PLW in Werie-Leke district, North Ethiopia. The nutritional recovery status of PLW after engaged on supplementary feeding program were marked as good. Strengthening of the TFSP through monitoring, evaluation and community-based nutrition education could support PLW.
