An Overview of Pharmacopoeial Status of Ayurvedic, Unani and Siddha Drugs

Abstract


 

Ayurvedic, Unani and Siddha Pharmacopoeia are part of regulatory framework of Drugs & Cosmetics Act, 1940. In these pharmacopoeia, single drugs (plant, mineral and metal origin) and classical compound formulations are incorporated to provide statutory standards. Ayurvedic Pharmacopoeia of India Part I (Vols. I–VIII) consists of 590 monographs on single drugs (plant, mineral, metal and extracts) and Part II (Vols. I–III) consists of 152 monographs on ayurvedic classical formulations. Unani Pharmacopoeia of India, Part I (Vols. I–VI) covers 298 single plant origin drugs and Pt-II (Vol. I and II) refers to 100 Unani classical formulations. Siddha Pharmacopoeia of India, Part-I published in two volumes provides specifications on 139 single drugs of plant origin.
