Effects of Specific Heat Ratio and Cut-off Ratio on the Performance of an Irreversible Dual Cycle

Mohd Nadeem Khan

Abstract

This study is aimed to investigate the effects of specific heat ratio and cut-off ratio on the Dual cycle performance. The variation in the power output and thermal efficiency with compression ratio, peak temperature of the cycle, specific heat ratio and cut-off ratio are presented. The result shows that with decrease in compression ratio up to a value, the increase in specific ratio lowers specific work output and increases efficiency whereas with increase in cut-off ratio both specific work output and efficiency increases. It was observed that with increase in compression ratio, the specific work output first increases and reaches its peak value and then decreases. The characteristics, i.e., surface of specific work output, compression ratio and specific heat ratio were plotted for further investigation. Also, selecting axis variables as efficiency, compression ratio and specific heat ratio, 3-dimensional plots were generated. The results obtained in this work can be helpful to understand how cycle performance gets influenced by the variation of specific heat ratio and cut-off ratio as also how it contributes in practical cycle analysis.
